The Cure
The Cure is one of those bands that touch your heart instantly. It is a strange band, in the sense that they give you this intense storm of emotions all at one go. Their poetic songs breathe a lot of melancholy, I feel sad, pain, joy, nostalgia, reminiscence. But the sadness and the pain attached to their songs isn't something dark or depressing, its rather bittersweet or beautiful. Its hard to put it into words because us as humans we tend to cling onto black and white definitions of everything. How can something be painful and beautiful at the same?! But trust me it can be. If it wasn't, words in the English lexicon like nostalgia, melancholy wouldn't take birth. Sadness, grief can be beautiful. You learn from them as well. And The Cure helps you in feeling them. I believe this band has to be one of the best alternative music bands who've graced this earth by their work.
Songs like 'The Last Day of Summer', 'Pictures of you', 'Friday I'm in love' are masterpieces lyrically and sonically. They plunge me in this intense feeling on my chest which is so hard to describe. It's beautiful, it's painful, it's nostalgic, it's bittersweet. It reminds me of the days gone by, the things I've left behind, the good old childhood, and the grief of knowing they'll never return. It's almost like the band knows your journey through in and through out. It's amazing how so many fans of The Cure can connect with this juxtaposition of varied emotions. Something so beautiful that it is painful, but at the same a pain you won't mind.
No wonder The Cure has a beautiful and big cult following. The darkness that gothic rock brings, with the post punk vibe, big and easily noticeable bass lines, simplistic guitar chords, wonderful and dreamy keyboards and Robert Smith's magical vocals; it is all a perfect mix for this recipe of intense burst of emotions. If you look at the comment sections on their songs on YouTube, you'll find people narrating wonderful stories of heartbreak, happiness, tragedy and nostalgia. You can find the teenage love stories, you stumble upon accounts of how The Cure has helped people with their depression. One can also find so many stories of how their ex girlfriends/ wives or boyfriends/husbands both living and dead introduced them to the band, and how each note of their songs remind them of their love. And as I read all of this, I realise life is beautiful in all of these simple stories. People reminiscing their by gone days or rejoicing their current ones or anticipating the forthcoming future anxiously and also in excitement. Just simple stories of people and their sole lives on this small planet, all through different facets of emotions.
And that is what The Cure gives you, it gives you emotions to hold onto without judging them. Their music reminds you that this life is a journey and everything shall be ok, and even if it was not to begin with, it is still ok. I love this band, and you should too!
